I'm not bragging and not that it matters but it was a lot harder than you think. If I only had photoshop and millions of colors back then... but maybe it wound't have been the same and would have taken all those colors for granted... NAHH!!
Designing everything in detail and in function was not typical in comics at the time. I had the chance to show off... and of course i did... and I had a great time doing it.
At the time all the artwork was just part of the design process and never meant for publication. Looking at this work anew and after all this time (more than 20 years ago) it brings to life an unexpected emotional component. At the time the book came out it was quite a feat to get the computer to work for you (and quite an ordeal to get it into the printing page) so there was an accomplishment factor that was important and hard to dismiss. However now that it’s all common place these hand-sketches seem to capture a raw sense of a unique place and time and look far more interesting to me than the final work. The interesting thing with hand-drawings is that they have the ability to transport you back to the exact place and time your mind was when you were working on them. Let me know if any of this raw stuff is as interesting to you as it is to me. Let me know what you think and if you want to see more.

It’s been 20 years since Batman Digital Justice was published and there has been growing chatter about a comeback of sorts (not sure how people pick up on these waves as there’re actually a few things in the works but nothing that has be announced or made official yet).

Meanwhile (and somewhat related) we’re in the process of gathering all the design materials that were used for the Batman book. Interestingly enough the sketches and raw designs themselves as well as that pioneer spirit (or naivety) that went with them are more interesting to me than the finished work (given that the technological restrictions were artistically painful). No one has ever seen this work (almost no one outside myself, close friends and those on a need to know basis). There's a wealth of material and it’s been more than 20 years since I’ve chosen to focus on it.

Here’s a peek at some of the behind the scenes work that went into the book. I’ll be posting tidbits of the work, as we get closer to making an announcement. Please let me know what do you think.

What was I thinking back then? We thought of ourselves as "anarchist" but that was more like a cool aptitude and a way to manifest yourself. For the most part, I remember having a great time and feeling excited about things. The whole punk movement in the SF Bay Area was a blast. So many good bands, so many talented people, so many parties, fashion, poetry, music, poster art, performance art, great, smart sexy gals and guys, underground clubs, shows, bars and hangouts, events, concerts, fun and "stuff"... and it was all real.

Too many to remember their names, bands that you have never heard of ten times better than any names you heard afterwards because they made it to the surface.

Life was exciting, things were happening what an incredible energy. Maybe it was a youth thing; or maybe there was magic in the air. And no I’m not talking about the hippies but the Punk Rockers. Such great memories.

Any one of you out there that remembers any of this?
These two pieces are the front and back covers of the magazine NART (no-art) as it was published in the SF Bay Area back in the late 70’s. Like with the Regan piece bellow it made the rounds big time… from telephone poles, street corners and local shops somewhere in the SF Bay Area to MIT, the Smithsonian and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris…not bad for an accident and naivety.
This picture album (on facebook) is dedicated to "comics" titles that are packaged and slated towards movie projects. Some are currently going through "the hollywood process" and some are new. I Just want to share it with all of you, to keep you posted and to hear your opinions.
Ohhh "Space Crusader"... The concept (as a movie) comes from a short story (by the same name) that was published in Heavy Metal (and all over Europe of course) a while ago (long while ago). The story and the concept are dark and satirical in nature (as it draws a parallel to religious fanaticism back here on earth) and very dear to me. This story along with a series of other short stories was published also in a graphic novel called "Zeppelin" (but meant to be called "The War Zone"). I got a lot of warm and sincere attention back then from the short stories. The book is now in the process of a remake (similar to what i've done with rebel and slated to come out in the US 2010. Let me know what you think and/or if you remember the original story.

SAN DIEGO, CA (September 2, 2009). IDW Publishing in cooperation with Digital Fusion Inc™ today announced the release of PEPE MORENO’S graphic novel, REBEL. In the best tradition of the post-apocalyptic movement and movie classics like The Road Warrior and Escape from New York, REBEL captures the raw essence of the period in its own right. Departing from the standard caped super hero mold, Pepe Moreno's style and aggressive, surgical approach to social commentary shook the world of graphic novels in its infancy. The message of his work still rings true. The combination of powerful story line and intuitive use of color continues to inspire generations of readers.
What do you know. You cut and paste together (i mean physically, in analogue not digitally) a few xeroxed images, xerox them again and make numerous copies (street flyers) and then staple them to every telephone pole you can find in the city (like everyone else in the punk days in the bay area was doing); a decade goes by and all of the sudden you're part of history. The idea back then was that you can copy (xerox) anything you want, mixed with anything else you find (from anywhere), give it a title and that was it. Disrespect of the 'establishment' was at the core of the punk movement (duh and how original), whether it was hippy rock or ©. Of course we had no money and there was this "new technology" called the XEROX machine. Funny that the very constraints of the circumstance gave it the art-form of the time.

Now more than a decade later the street poster work and the one-shot underground publications (NoART Magazine) during the punk movement in the S.F. Bay Area have been published (Street Art: The Punk poster in San Francisco 1977-1981), reviewed in academic publications (Design Issues - MIT Press), some of which have been placed permanently in museum collections, such as the Smithsonian and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.

Most recently, the some of the work has appeared in the newly released documentary film American Artifact: The Rise of the American Rock Poster Art. http://www.americanartifactmovie.com/

When you're doing something full of purpose -no matter what it is and/or how silly and worthless it may seem- you never know. If enough time goes by, you may be making history or end up in a museum someplace (even in France). Please note the "full of purpose" part, not sure if it works when doing thing in a half-ass kind of way.

So if you were wondering as I was as to where all this political cartooning I have been doing of lately comes from? Well, wonder no more, as it turns out I had the very same tendency almost a couple of decades ago during the punk years (I mean the punk movement back in the late 70’s).
